The British in Hamburg 1945 – 1958Michael Ahrens describes the organisation and everyday life of the British occupation in Hamburg and its protagonists as well as British-German cooperation. The internal constitution of the “British community” in Hamburg, with all its priorities, conflicts and problems, is portrayed here for the first time, including the scantly researched first phase of the occupation in May 1945 and British organisation and infrastructure. The lecture, based on a recently published study (Die Briten in Hamburg. Besatzerleben 1945 – 1958, Michael Ahrens, Dölling und Galitz Verlag, 2011), describes varied aspects of the daily life and leisure activities of the members of the occupation, such as binational love life and contacts through clubs and associations. >>> |
